In Life, You’ve Got ToPay Your Dues!Message from the Director, Jack Seddon
Collective bargaining is under attack here in Florida. Reckless city and county administrators, commissioners and legislators (to name a few) have an agenda to pay for their own “pet projects” on the backs of all its public employees. It’s disgusting that the duty an employee has to his or her employer has become nothing more than as an ATM machine!
Vital services to John and Jane Q taxpayer are at risk, your health and safety on the job are at risk, your ability to make a fair wage, your quality of life and your ability to take care of your family, ALL have been put at risk.
All of our Divisions and other AFL-CIO affiliates have been vigorously fighting to make sure your careers and benefits stop being offered up as budgetary sacrifices. Unilateral changes to your pensions, wholesale privatization of prisons and “financial urgency” have all been challenged and battled to make sure that you are not forced to have to shoulder the burden of irresponsible city and county administrators, commissioners and legislators who have completely abandoned playing by the rules.
Our ability to preserve your rights on the job must be fortified! Here in Florida, we have to deal with “right-to-work” laws and we are required to spend our time and money representing members and non-members alike in order to keep ALL people safe and treated fairly. But “right-to-work” laws undermine unions, which then weakens the best job security protection workers have - the union contract.
We need to strengthen our economy! All of our Divisions and other unions will play a vital role in making sure your job and livelihood stay safe. In order to do this, though, we need everyone to pay their fair share. Invest in your life and pay your dues.
Don’t Let Them Fool You! What’s REALLY Behind the War on Unions
They say their financial woes are because unions are too extravagant with their wages, pensions and benefits. But don’t let them fool you!
This “we’re broke” theme being used by anti-worker governors and legislatures across America is built purely on rhetoric that is being force-fed to the public to disguise the fact that what they’re really trying to do is make sure that unions don’t have a voice anymore. All across America, the largest assault on workers’ rights is being fueled by a well-funded network of conservative front groups that you’ve probably never even heard of and exist for one thing alone - to derail unions.
