Your Executive Director

The Executive Director of the Federation of Physicians and Dentists/AHPE is John J. "Jack" Seddon. Jack has been the Executive Director of FPD since 1989. Prior to this role he served as assistant to the president of the FEA (Florida Education Association)/United, AFT, AFL-CIO and as Executive Director of the Sarasota Classified Teacher Association in Sarasota, Florida. Previous to this he served as a professional air traffic controller and held several staff and elected positions within its union PATCO, and serves as its current Executive Director.

Jack Seddon served in the United States Air Force, the U.S. Air Force Reserves, and the New York Air National Guard. He attended the Jack Maher School for Labor Studies and holds a B.A degree from George Meany Institute, Antioch University, and a M.A. in labor and policy studies from Empire State College, SUNY which he received in 1990. His Master’s thesis is titled, "PATCO – A Perspective – Who Were They?" The subtitle, "What Were They, and What Could Have or Should Have Been Done?" refers to the reckless decisions that determined the fate of air traffic controllers during the Regan years. The thesis once posted in its entirety on the "old" FPD web site, is still available to anyone wishing to read it by requesting it through the Tallahassee office. It will be reposted to the web at a later date.

Jack is a respected and experienced union negotiator; he handles all aspects of union representation including grievances, arbitration, unfair labor practices, lobbying, and political action. He has testified for legislative and congressional committees and is familiar with all areas of labor-management.

Early biographical data indicates that Jack was an activist even in his early childhood. At the age of eleven he was a newspaper carrier in New York and pulled off the first paperboy strike on Long Island - and won. At age 14 he engineered a caddy strike at the Crescent Club in Huntington, N.Y. – and won. In 1967, he went to work for the FAA as an air traffic controller. PATCO, the Professional Air Traffic Controller’s Organization was born as a result of his and many others' efforts.

As a product of his labor, the Tallahassee-based FPD now has thousands of physicians, dentists and professional members from around the State of Florida and the nation. The Federation of Physicians and Dentists is affiliated with the National Union of Hospital and Healthcare Employees (NUHHCE) of which Jack is a National Vice-President.

The main office for the Federation of Physicians and Dentists/AHPE is located in Tallahassee, Florida with a regional office in  Connecticut.  The home office for our affiliate NUHHCE is in Philadelphia, while the AFSCME office is located in Washington D.C.
