WHAT IS SEAG?
A Democratic union of, for and by attorneys employed by
the State of Florida.
Attorneys joined together for purposes of collective
bargaining and to have a voice in the decisions affecting our wages, hours
and working conditions.
An organization affiliated with the Federation of
Physicians and Dentists (FPD), the National Union of Hospital and Health
Care Employees (NUHHCE), the American Federation of State, County, and
Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO.
THE CREATION OF SEAG
I n 1993, a
group of state employed attorneys petitioned the Public Employees
Relations Commission [PERC] for the right to organize SEAG. The State of
Florida filed objections, arguing that state attorneys should not have the
right to collectively bargain, as do other state employees. From 1993 to
1999, SEAG successfully appealed to the Circuit Court, Appeals Court and
the Florida Supreme Court. On May 20, 1999, the Supreme Court ruled that
public employed attorneys have the constitutional right to organize
a union.
SEAG works through the FPD which, during the past
decade, has successfully addressed the issues of select exempt state
attorneys. The FPD provides the resources, staff and experience
needed to improve our working- lives.
WHY SEAG?
Without a union, we are the most vulnerable employees
working for the state. When others are deciding on the fates of our jobs,
our voices are not heard.
We must join together for a real and powerful voice
in all decisions affecting our careers. Through collective
bargaining we can negotiate for:
Protection of our professional standards
Fair and equitable salaries
More respect and input on the job
Smoother career progression
A grievance procedure

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?
Call the FPD office at (850) 942-6636 or (800) 373-5777
to contact a SEAG coordinator. Or you can e-mail us at fpd1@prodigy.net
In order to make SEAG a reality, attorneys themselves must continue to
build SEAG through talking to colleagues, signing membership cards and
organizing meetings.
